How to Format a Hard Drive

A hard drive plays a crucial role in the working of your computer. It needs to be formatted in certain situations. Here is a step-by-step instruction guide on how to format a hard drive. Although hard drives are theoretically referred to as secondary storage devices, they are, in fact, of primary importance from the user's point of view. Each and every form of data, ranging from business documents to spreadsheets, presentations, software, databases, MP3's, audio files, DVD movies, PC games, pictures, etc. is stored on a computer hard drive. The hard drive consists of multiple magnetized aluminum alloy platters which store the entire data digitally, in a binary format. In most cases, a hard disk provides trouble-free performance and does not need formatting, data recovery, or any other repair activity. However, there are certain situations in which formatting a hard drive becomes inevitable.

When to Format:

You should consider formatting a hard drive in the following scenarios:

your computer's operating system (OS) has become corrupt in some way or the other.any portion of your hard drive has developed logical problems.your computer has been infected by a dangerous virus which has affected your files, folders and the operating system.your computer has become painfully slow and you wish to speed it up.there has been an improper or erroneous installation of the operating system.you wish to install a different operating system. With Windows XP. Formatting is a process which completely erases your hard drive and wipes out the entire data that is stored on it. There are two ways of formatting a hard drive with Windows XP. The first method is as follows:

Procedure:

Double-click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop. If you cannot find it on your desktop, you can also locate it by clicking on 'Start' at the bottom-left of your screen.Once you click on 'My Computer', a new window will open up which will display the details of your hard drive. If your hard disk has been partitioned into multiple hard drives, then all the partitions will be displayed as well.Select the hard drive that you wish to format. Clicking on 'Format' will lead you to a new window that displays several drive formatting options. It is recommended that you tinker with these formatting options only if you are well-acquainted with them technologically and conceptually. Otherwise, to be on the safer side, it is better that you stick to the default format settings.Once you click on the command button named 'Start', the formatting process begins and you can view its status through the progress bar. A message window will flash on your screen once the formatting is successfully completed.

An Alternate Way:

There is another way of formatting a hard drive through Windows XP, which is slightly longer than the method described earlier.

Procedure:

Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon and select Manage from the list of menu options. In the new window that appears, locate 'Disk Management' from the list of items that are displayed in the left-hand column. Double-click on 'Disk Management' to display information about the hard disk details, storage area, partitions, etc.Select the particular hard drive that you wish to format and right-click to display the drop-down menu options. Clicking on 'Format' will open up a new window with various drive formatting options. You can change them if you wish to, otherwise you should select the default option and click on 'OK' to begin formatting. An advantage of this method is that in addition to plain formatting, there are also provisions to partition and rename the hard drives as per your wish.I'm sure the simplicity of the above formatting methods will have put your worries to rest. However, please ensure that you backup all your important data before you format your hard drive, or else you might have a headache while recovering deleted files. These were a couple of ways in which to format a hard drive using Windows XP. Though the process varies with each operating system, the fundamental concept remains the same.
